Enameling Brass vs Copper

For those of you enameling people, just in case you try to enamel brass instead of copper… Here is something I learned today: DON’T DO IT! I read on a popular enameling site that there was a discovery that brass enamels the same as copper. Uh…no it doesn’t. The same torching session that resulted in these sky blue copper earrings, I torched some brass circles. I used the sifting method and cooled them the same as I always do with my copper pieces. Not even a minute after taking them from the flame…POP…POP… off popped the enamel. If I had not had my goggles on, one would have come very close to hitting my eye! No kidding, the enamel flew off of the brass. Perhaps cooling a bit slower in vermiculite could have saved them, but I would suggest sticking to copper. I know I will. Seriously!
